Chinese President Hu Jintao, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and other leaders have watched the Peking Opera at a gala here to celebrate the New Year.

The 200-year-old Peking Opera, which combines instrumental music, vocal performances, mime, dance and acrobatics, is regarded as a cultural treasure of China.

Top legislator Wu Bangguo and political advisor Jia Qinglin were among nearly 1,000 visitors who attended the program at the National Centre for the Performing Arts Thursday, reports Xinhua.

The show included excerpts from the classical Peking Opera 'The Fourth Son Visits His Mother' and other traditional works.

The Unesco has listed Peking Opera as an intangible cultural heritage.

Ron Paul's stance on Israel called into question

LOS ANGELES | Wed Dec 28, 2011 11:31pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul defended his record on Israel Wednesday after a former aide said the congressman favored abolishing the nation.

"Dr. Paul is the most pro-Israel candidate in this race," campaign spokesman Gary Howard said in an emailed statement.

"He is the only leader who will stop sending tens of billions of dollars in aid and arms to her Arab enemies, cut off subsidies to companies who do business with Iran, and allow Israel to defend herself as she sees fit, without the permission and interference of the U.S. or the United Nations."

Although a longshot to win the Republican presidential race, Paul is a leading contender for next Tuesday's Republican caucus vote in Iowa -- the first nominating contest in the nation. Paul previously drew fire for anti-Israeli and racist, anti-gay messages contained in newsletters published under his name two decades ago.

Last Friday, a spokesman for Paul said the congressman apologized for not paying enough attention to "ghost writers" he said were responsible for the remarks in question and repeated the congressman's disavowal of those views.

But in a lengthy statement posted earlier this week on the blog site RightWingNews.com, former congressional aide Eric Dondero said his one-time boss had long harbored stridently anti-Israel opinions that he often expressed privately.

Dondero, 49, who said he served as Paul's senior aide in his Gulf Coast district from 1997 through 2003, denied ever seeing evidence that Paul was anti-Semitic.

"He is, however, most certainly, anti-Israel," Dondero wrote. "He wishes the Israeli state did not exist at all. He expressed this to me numerous times in our private conversations.

"His view is that Israel is more trouble than it is worth, specifically to the American taxpayer," Dondero continued. "He sides with the Palestinians and supports their calls for the abolishment of the Jewish state, and the return of Israel, all of it, to the Arabs."

A leading Jewish human rights organization had called on Paul on Wednesday to address Dondero's assertions regarding the candidate's position on Israel.

"We hope that (Paul) would confront this issue," Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder and dean of the Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center, told Reuters on Wednesday. He noted more than 60 years of bipartisan U.S. support for the Jewish state.

"If he says that his principal aide was mistaken and that he never said that, that's one thing. But if he adheres to such a position, that he believes there ought not be an Israel, that should be a wake-up call to America."

The Wiesenthal Center is not the first Jewish group to express consternation with the Texas congressman over Israel.

The Republican Jewish Coalition declined to invite him to its December 7 candidates forum, citing what it called his extreme views following a debate in November in which Paul argued that the United States should be less involved in Israeli affairs.

"They can take care of themselves," he said then. "Why do we have this automatic commitment that we're going to send our kids and send our money endlessly to Israel?"

Paul has called for reduced foreign aid generally.

Dondero, a Navy veteran, acknowledged that Paul's supporters

previously dismissed him as a "disgruntled former employee," and said he parted company with Paul in early 2004 over sharp differences on foreign policy matters.

Speaking to Reuters on Wednesday, Dondero, who publishes his own LibertarianRepublican.net blog and earns a living gathering petition signatures for ballot proposals around the country, stood by his assessment of his former boss.

He said he wrote about Paul in response to requests from other conservative blog writers seeking greater insights into the congressman's views.

VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand Jr. PDS-ST510-VP

Not too surprisingly, considering the similar name, the VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand Jr. PDS-ST510-VP ($100 street) has a lot in common with the VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand PDS-ST415-VP ($100 street, 3.5 stars) that I recently reviewed. Both are portable scanners that scan without a computer. As the Jr. in the name implies, however, the PDS-ST510-VP is even smaller and more portable than the PDS-ST415-VP, which means that if you want to minimize what you have to carry as much as possible, the PDS-ST510-VP should be high on your list of possibilities.

At 0.9 by 6.6 by 1.2 inches (HWD) and weighing less than 4 ounces, the PDS-ST510-VP looks less like a magic wand than like a long, thin candy bar. That makes it the right size and shape to easily fit into a shirt or suit pocket or into a handbag. Whatever it looks like, however, it works much like both the PDS-ST415-VP, which also doesn't look like a magic wand, and the PlanOn DocuPen Xtreme X05 ($369.99 direct 3.5 stars), which does.

All three scanners work essentially the same way, letting you wave your magic wand, or, less poetically, roll the scanner, over a scan target. In each case, the sensor and rollers are on the bottom of the scanner. To scan, you place the scanner at the top or side of a page, and then sweep down or across. The scan gets saved to memory, and you can move it to your computer later. Connect the PDS-ST510-VP by the supplied USB cable, let the computer recognize it as a USB drive, and copy the files.

What's the difference?
One big difference between the PDS-ST510-VP on the one hand and the PDS-ST415-VP and DocuPen Xtreme X05 on the other is that it's a lot smaller. More precisely, with a scan element only a little wider than 5 inches, it's not wide enough to scan an entire letter size page in one sweep, the way the PDS-ST415-VP can. Instead, you have to scan the page in two or more separate scans that you can optionally stitch together later with stitching software. Note too that you can scan originals up to 5 by 53 inches in one sweep.

Using the software is optional in more than one way, since VuPoint Solutions doesn't even ship it with the scanner. Instead, the manual (which consists of one printed fold-out page with small type) gives instructions for where you can download free stitching software from Microsoft, the Microsoft Image Composite Editor.

Unfortunately, since the software isn't under VuPoint Solutions' control, there's no guarentee that Microsoft won't change the address, so the URL in the manual won't work, or even that the program will remain available as a free download. If you have any other photo stitching software however, it should work just as well. You may also choose to skip stitching software altogether, and keep the separate scans separate.

Setup, Scanning, and Recognizing Text
As with the PDS-ST415-VP, there's not much to set up with the PDS-ST510-VP. It comes with a rechargeable lithium battery already installed. Simply charge it, insert a microSD card, and you're ready to scan. Be sure you have a card handy however, since the scanner doesn't come with one. According to VuPoint Solutions, you can use cards with up to 32GB of storage.

Scanning is easy. Simply roll down or across the page. Given that you can't capture a full letter-size page at once, sweeping across is probably the better approach for single-column text, since it will capture full lines. For multicolumn text, scanning a column with each sweep will generally make more sense. Either way, as with the PDS-ST415-VP, there's no learning curve. I got acceptable scans starting with my first try, both for recognizing text, and for scanning photos well enough to scan an article, for example, and get recognizable images of any photos.

The PDS-ST510-VP also comes with the same software as the PDS-ST415-VP, Abbyy Screenshot Reader, an OCR utility with a limited ability to translate images of text into editable text. Screenshot Reader recognizes text showing on screen, and it can recognize only as much text at once as can fit on the screen. To use it with the scanner files, which are in JPG format, you open the file on screen, and then tell Screenshot Reader to recognize the text.

Depending on your screen resolution, you may need to recognize a letter-size page of text in two or more pieces, which may lead you to decide that there's no good reason to stitch pages together. In my tests, using a 1280 by 1024 screen resolution, I got the best result with a 300 pixel per inch image by zooming Photoshop to 66 percent, so the text fit just within the screen width. At that size, I had to recognize each page in three sections.

At smaller zoom sizes I could recognize more of the page, but the accuracy dropped. At 66 percent zoom, the program read our Arial test page at sizes as small as 8 points, and our Times New Roman test page as sizes as small as 10 points, without a mistake. At 25 percent, the largest possible zoom size for showing a full page on screen at once, it couldn't read any size text sample for either font without a mistake.

Other Issues

One other issue with the PDS-ST510-VP is that you can't see if you have a high enough quality scan until you look at it on a computer, at which point you may no longer have the original available to rescan. However, you can't count this too heavily against the scanner, since the same limitation applies to most scanners that can scan without a computer. One the few exceptions is the Editors' Choice Visioneer Mobility ($199.99 direct, 4 stars), which lets you scan to a smartphone so you can see the results.

The best argument for the PDS-ST510-VP is its portability. Other handheld scanners, including the PDS-ST415-VP and DocuPen Xtreme X05 will scan faster, by letting you scan more of a page in a single sweep, but they won't fit in your pocket. And while the Visioneer Mobility will let you see your scan results on the spot, it's bigger still.

I'd like this scanner a lot better if it came with internal memory or included a microSD card and also came with its own stitching software?which is to say, there's room for improvement. But if you want a scanner you can carry with you literally every day to quickly scan articles, receipts, notes, business cards, or anything else you want a record of, the VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand Jr. PDS-ST510-VP can certainly do the job well enough to make it worth considering.

3 people dead in storm off Russia's east coast (AP)

MOSCOW ? Rescue vessels and a helicopter are searching for five people missing in a fierce storm off Russia's east coast after a Cambodia-flagged ship sank early Sunday.

The Russian Emergencies Ministry said in a statement that it has recovered three bodies from the icy waters of the La Perouse Strait, which lies between the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan.

The accident took place in the same waters in which a Russian floating oil rig capsized and sank last Sunday killing 17 people. Thirty-six people are still missing, feared dead.

Officials said five of the Cambodia-flagged ship's crew were Russian, and the others are Indonesian. Two of the dead have been identified as Russian nationals, and one remains unidentified.

The ship, named Ginga, was sailing through the Russian waters from a Japanese port. Russian news agencies reported that it was a fishing boat.

Emergencies Ministry representatives were not immediately available for comment.

Two trawlers, a Russian helicopter, a rescue vessel, two steamboats and a Japanese maritime safety department ship were conducting the search. Efforts were hampered by strong winds and meters-high waves.

Nikolay Sukhanov, a top official from Russia's Sailors Union, told RIA Novosti that he thought that the size of the crew, its flag and route could suggest that the ship was poaching in the waters on the Russian-Japanese maritime border.

An early unofficial?kanged preview of CyanogenMod 9 for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has made its way to the Internet thanks to DaAwesome1?from XDA, who compiled the source from CyanogenMod?s GitHub and gives all credit to the CM team. We?re not exactly sure as to what is working and what is broken in this build, as there is no indication in the original post, but the installation process is pretty simple if you?ve been dying to get a look at whats in store for the world from the CyanogenMod team, who have worked around the clock to bring the first batch of nightly builds for as many devices as possible.

Here?s what you?ll need to do:

  1. Make a Nandroid backup of your current ROM
  2. Head over to the ROM thread on XDA
  3. Carefully read the instructions
  4. Stare in amazement at your early preview of CM9

We?ll be keeping tabs on this project, as well as many other currently active projects, and we?ll let you know once there are updates. Stay tuned!

NASA Studies 3D Printing for the ISS, Future Space Missions (ContributorNetwork)

According to Scientific America, NASA is looking at a technology called 3D printing to allow the crew on the International Space Station to manufacture spare parts and tools at will. The technology has implication for long term space settlement.

    What is 3D printing?

According to Computerworld, a 3D printer is capable of creating any object that is programmed into it, often from a Computer Aided Design device. It generally does this by using a polymer, spraying it in layers in the same manner as an ink jet printer until the object is created. The polymer is then hardened by being exposed to an LED light. Another method uses a metallic powder that is bonded together as it is printed out.

Applications to which 3D printing has been used in are almost endless. These include rapid prototyping, create on demand spare parts and tools, and even visual art. 3D printing has been used to make exact copies of dinosaur fossils, rare art objects and bones and other body parts for forensic pathology. A similar technology is being developed to use 3D printing using biological material to create spare body parts.

Why is 3D printing so important for settling space?

Whether one is living on the ISS or on a future colony on the moon or Mars, providing spare parts would be prohibitively expensive. However, 3D printing would give a space settlement the ability to create spare parts or just about anything else at will, just using raw materials. Indeed 3D printing might help such a settlement become self sufficient early if local materials can be found and processed so that it is suitable for use in that technology.

How is NASA developing 3D technology for space applications?

NASA has already tested a number of commercial 3D printers in an aircraft using parabolic flights to create microgravity. A company called Made in Space is creating a 3D printer designed to work in microgravity without massive modifications as well as developing 3D printing for aerospace applications on the ground. Made in Space has flown its prototype 3D printer on NASA sponsored microgravity flights.

    What is the bottom line?

The ability to manufacture virtually anything using a 3D printer and raw material would allow the operating life of the International Space Station to be extended almost indefinitely, as well as reducing the cost of keeping it resupplied. Further forward in time, 3D printing technology can be used to facilitate long duration space flight, such as human missions to Mars, and settlements on other worlds or deep space.

    Huawei Pillar (Cricket Wireless)

The Huawei Pillar for Cricket Wireless ($59.99 direct) is a simple, budget-price cell phone?that's built for texting.

The Pillar measures 4.3 by 2.4 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.5 ounces. The display is just 2 inches, but sports a respectable 320-by-480-pixel resolution. The keyboard, meanwhile, looks like a slight smaller version that what you'd find on a BlackBerry Bold. That makes it a good choice for frequent texters.

The phone is a tri-band 2G 1xRTT (850/1700/1900 MHz) CDMA device with no Wi-Fi. No-contract plans on Cricket start at $35 per month for unlimited voice calls and text messaging. It's a good deal if you live in Cricket's coverage area and don't require fast Internet for Web browsing. Battery life is rated at four hours of talk time.

The Pillar also works as a music player. There's a standard 3.5mm jack on the top of the phone. It lacks any significant amount of internal memory, but accepts microSD cards up to?16GB. There's also a 0.3-megapixel VGA camera that has no flash or auto-focus capability.

Ultimately, if you aren't looking to consume media, and just want a low-cost, no-contract phone to make calls and send text messages, the Huawei Pillar looks like a decent choice, but you may also want to check out the Samsung Comment.

Casino gets 16,000 job applications in 4 days (Reuters)

CLEVELAND (Reuters) ? A soon-to-open Cleveland casino was bombarded with job applications from 16,000 people in just four days after announcing openings for 750 positions, a casino official said on Saturday.

Due to the high volume of responses, the Horseshoe Casino took down about half of the job openings on Friday and is now shifting through the resumes to find qualified candidates.

"We are utilizing employees all across the county to review applicants," Jennifer Kulczycki of Rock Gaming, parent company of the casino, told Reuters Saturday.

"We were blown out of the water by the numbers but we announced we would hire 90 percent of our staff from the Cleveland area and we are sure we will meet that goal."

This is the second round of job postings the casino, slated to open in March, has put on its website.

Ohio voters approved four casinos in the state in November 2009. Dan Gilbert, owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers professional basketball team, also owns Rock Gaming, and partnered with Caesars Entertainment Corp. to build the casino in Cleveland.

According to Kulczycki, the most sought-after positions during this round were security, cage cashier, food and beverage workers and administrative assistants.

In September, the casino posted more than 600 job openings and 12,000 people applied over the course of one month. Eventually that number was whittled down to 4,000 and more than 600 are currently receiving free training.

According to Kulczycki, employees will sort through the applications and invite some to in-person interviews. Those who do well will receive a conditional job offer.

PFT: Players win big in new TV deal

    amd_john-madden-raissmanGetty Images

Hall of Fame coach and legendary broadcaster John Madden made his weekly appearance today on SiriusXM NFL Radio with Rich Gannon and Adam Schein, and Coach Madden made a stirring and persuasive case for a culture change at all levels of football regarding the issue of concussions.

Madden?s remarks were so compelling and blunt and convincing that the league should have him reprise the message for a DVD that is sent to every football coach in America.

In fact, Madden may have been too candid, given the various pieces of litigation the league currently is facing, with allegations that the NFL failed to warn players about the risks of concussions.? Madden says that the issue had been ?swept under the rug? for years, requiring significant changes now in order to properly address the situation in the future.

And while Madden didn?t specifically blame the Browns for the team?s decision to allow quarterback Colt McCoy to re-enter last Thursday?s game against the Steelers, Madden said that the injury was handled ?wrong in every way,? or words to that effect.? (We?ll get the full transcript from our friends at SiriusXM NFL Radio.)

So Browns president Mike Holmgren can claim all he wants that it?s ?unfair? to criticize the team for failing to hold McCoy out of the game, but the fact remains that the team allowed McCoy to re-enter the game with a concussion.? And Holmgren can make all the excuses he wants about how the doctors and trainers were busy and didn?t see James Harrison put a helmet into McCoy?s chin, but the fact remains that the team allowed McCoy to re-enter the game with a concussion.? And Holmgren can point to all the times the Browns kept players out of games after suffering concussions, but the fact remains that the team allowed McCoy to re-enter the game with a concussion.

Madden explained that coaches and teammates tend to assume that, when doctor and/or trainer is evaluating a player, the doctor and/or trainer know where and how hard the player had been hit.? Madden said that the next step in the process of spotting concussions is to ensure that teammates and coaches don?t make that assumption.

If one of the most influential, old-school coaches believes strongly about this issue, everyone associated with the game ? at every level ? should take notice.? Here?s hoping that Coach Madden keeps spreading the word, and that everyone who hears his words heeds them.

Teen girls send, receive 4K texts a month

    Nielsen

    By Athima Chansanchai

A recent report shows teens who text and surf the Web using their smartphones have tripled their data usage in the past year, with young women the most likely to let their fingers do the talking, sending and receiving nearly 4,000 messages a month on average.

Nielsen's latest analysis?reveals the ascendancy of teens into what the tracking firm labels the "mobile Data Tsunami,"??or the rapid growth of data consumption by U.S. smartphone users with the emergence of unlimited plans amid a social media-addicted society. Teens hold a formidable place as "the leading message senders," in these polls of more than 65,000 mobile subscribers who volunteered for the studies and ponied up their monthly cellphone bills.

The latest information about teens in particular give weight to anecdotal evidence of heavy texting. (For example, my friends have told me more than a few times about how rampant text messaging is among their early teen children, from dawn to well after dusk.) In the third quarter of 2011, teens ages 13-17 used an average of 320 MB of data per month, which is an increase of 256 percent from the same point last year ? growing at a rate faster than any other age group.?

    Nielsen

While Nielsen finds much of this comes at the hands of teen boys, who took in 382 MB per month (vs. their female counterparts' 266 MB), teen girls are on top when it comes to messaging, with 3,952 messages per month vs. boys' 2,815. (The average per teen is 3,417.)

A year ago, Pew came out with a report showing a similar preoccupation with texting, finding that the average teen sends and receives 3,339 texts a month.

Besides messaging, teens are also consuming data on their phones for Internet browsing, social networking, email, app downloads, and app use.

What they aren't using their phones for: making voice calls. "Voice usage has declined the most among this group, from an average of 685 minutes to 572 minutes. When surveyed, the top three reasons teens said that they prefer messaging to calling was because it is faster (22 percent), easier (21 percent), and more fun (18 percent)."

Given the distraction phones ? especially smartphones???are to this particular age group, safety advocates have laid on the pressure to curb teens from texting while driving, and there are plenty of apps out there that can help parents prevent the two from mixing. But in the past, teens have pegged drinking and driving as much more dangerous than texting and driving.
