Ifill to lead NAACP Legal Defense Fund | Maryland Daily Record


University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law Professor Sherrilyn A. Ifill has been named president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund Inc.

sherrilyn ifillIfill will become the second woman to head the civil rights law organization, according to a news release from the law school. Ifill began her career at the Legal Defense & Educational Fund as an assistant counsel.

The organization, founded by Supreme Court Justice and civil rights lawyer Thurgood Marshall, advocates racial equality through the legal system.

Because of her new position, Ifill will take a leave of absence from the law school while she switches off working at the organization?s offices in New York and Washington, D.C.

Ifill, who has been at the law school since 1993, teaches civil procedure and legal writing as well as a seminar called ?Reparations, Reconciliation and Restorative Justice,? according to the law school?s website.
